Sri Lanka is one of the most rewarding self-drive destinations in Asia. Within a few hours of Colombo, you can be winding through tea-covered hills, hugging the southern coastline, or navigating ancient cultural sites.
1. Colombo to Ella
The classic route. Take the A4 through Ratnapura and climb into the Hill Country. Allow 5-6 hours. The views from Ella Rock are worth every kilometre.
2. Colombo to Galle Fort
The Southern Expressway makes this a 90-minute run. Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the southern coast offers some of the best beaches on the island.
3. Colombo to Kandy
The cultural triangle starts here. Drive through Kegalle and stop at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage en route.
